Play Therapy

Play Therapy is an evidence based practice that is most developmentally appropriate for children ages 3-12, but the approach can also be adapted for use with teens. It has proven to be a very effective method of treating many different presenting concerns including ADHD, adjustment issues, depression, trauma, grief, school and social difficulties, parent/child relationship issues, etc.

A skilled therapist often uses a combination of both child directed and therapist directed play and expressive arts to allow for a child’s expression of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and experiences by playing it out instead of talking it out. It also promotes exploration of their problem areas, strengths, and limitations in a safe, non-threatening, and natural way.

Because children have a built in drive to play, and this is how they most readily learn, process their world, and understand their role in it, it’s a very supportive approach for parents to consider for their child or teen’s treatment. Most simply put, this therapy involves play with a powerful purpose. It can promote healing, improve coping skills, increase self-esteem, and encourage growth and resilience in a more effective way than other approaches involving talk therapy.
